Greetings from St. Teresa’s Provincial House, Asansol

I am Sr. Mavis, the Provincial Superior of the Eastern Province of the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa. This letter is in appreciation and gratitude for the good works  the Alumni of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, do in general and very specially for the poor of Hathimara Village under the able guidance of Fr. Felix Raj, the Principal.

The sisters of Hathimara gave me all details of the services – camps and the  eye operations freely performed at the Priyamvada Hospital, Kolkata on the Poor patients of Hathimara village. I want to tell you dear Father that we appreciate the yeomen service of these Alumni members, the team of Doctors and other social workers. All credit goes to you Jesuits, who have instilled in them the values of sacrifice and selfless service to humanity and  that for the greater glory of God.

Xavier’s Alumni honours outstanding Xaverians at Bangaluru

St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association (SXCCAA)’s Bangaluru Chapter felicitated 5 outstanding Xaverians and one fellow Jesuit Alumnus of other Jesuit College at its reunion held at the Century Club, Bangaluru on Saturday last. Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, Principal, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata and President, SXCCAA gave away the awards. The youngest recipient was Md. Ali Amir who enrolled himself in the Physics Hons at the age of 12 in the first autonomous batch in 2006 and is now pursuing as Research Scholar in IISC, Bangaluru. Other awardees included Prof. Arindam Ghosh of Physics Dept, IISC, Naveen Agarwal, renowned Business Advisor, Indranil Roychoudhury, eminent Corporate Leader, Father Thomas George for Social Work and the Fellow Jesuit Alumni Award went to famous Radio Jockey Darius Sunawala, an ex-student of St. Joseph’s College, Bangaluru.

Father Felix Raj, in his address, thanked the alumni/ae for their support in the expansion programmes of the College. The Hony. Secretary of the SXCCAA Firdausul Hasan said that the next international chapter of the association is going to be opened in Sydney, Australia on 3 November this year. Huneid Toopiwala, Secretary of the SXCCAA’s South India Chapter and Rudra Sankar Roy, the Convenor of the reunion, named as ‘XIA – Xaverians in Action’, also spoke on the occasion. More than 150 Xaverians from 1963 batch to the last year pass out attended the reunion with their family members.

Mother Teresa Remembered.

 “What was the most painful incident of your life” Navin Chawla, IAS, ex-Chief Election Commissioner of India and the official biographer of Mother Teresa had once asked the Saint of the Gutters. And the Mother had recounted how, while walking on the streets of a city shed did not wish to name, she had heard a growing human voice from behind a garbage dump. The voice was that of a dying lady whom the Mother, with the help of the accompanying sister had taken to her local home. After cleaning the wretched lady and administering medical aid, the Mother had asked the lady as to who had left her alone in the dumps to die?

The lady had told the astounded Mother that it was her own son who had thrown her to the garbage bin, having forced her to sign her last will and testament.

The Mother told the lady that the time was near to meet her maker and that she should forgive her son so that she may go in peace at which the lady, a mother herself, expressed her inability to cleanse her soul of the hatred she he harbored against her son.

Gently tending the dying lady with saintly compassion, the Mother touched and transformed her and as she prayed for her, the lady’s life flickered out but before that she looked at the Mother and told her that she had forgiven her son and a smile spread across her face. In death she was blessed.

This was one of the various anecdotes from the life and times of Mother Teresa that Navin Chawla shared with the St. Xavier’s College auditorium packed with nuns and sisters from the Missionaries of Charity, Rev. Fathers, professors, alumni members and students of the college.

Initiated by Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, SJ, the Principal of the College and a close associate of the Mother, the programme was graced by HG. Rt. Rev. Thomas D’Souza, the Archbishop of Calcutta and the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charities

Snehasish Sur,the immediate Past Secretary of the SXCCAA conducted the proceedings while Firdausul Hasan, Hon. Secretary gave the vote of thanks.

The book, Disinvestment in India: Trends, Problems and Prospects focuses on economic reforms and resulting disinvestment of public sector enterprises (PSE) in India. The book quite lucidly analyses the pre and post disinvestment performance of the PSEs in terms of efficiency analysis and many other indicators of the enterprises with the help of case studies for two different PSEs chosen on the basis of their pre disinvestment profitability status, viz, Disinvestment of a profit making PSE – Bharat Aluminum Company Ltd. (BALCO) & Disinvestment of loss making PSE - Lagan Jute Machinery Co. Ltd (LJML).

Starting from the conceptual framework of Development through the Public Sector enterprises from a historical point of view the book enlightens on to the LPG model implemented in nineties. Before coming to the Indian scenario of disinvestment in reality, literatures on disinvestment in context to foreign countries has been discussed so as to make a comparative analysis in regard to policy taken in domestic and foreign countries for disinvestment.  Implementation of LPG model being the break point from the India’s economical point of view, the author has made his discussion into two subsections – Pre Liberalization growth of PSEs and related development & Post Disinvestment status and current policies of the Government regarding disinvestment.

However the crunch of the book lies in the discussion of the two disinvested PSEs as case studies. This part of the book tries to address the yearlong controversy on the disinvestment decision of BALCO. As known to all of us that this company was disinvested while it was running in profit, considering this as a case of disinvestment of a profit making enterprise, the comparison has been made with a case of disinvestment of a loss making enterprise. Thereby, the study tries to identify the various reasons of disinvestment of these two companies from the view point of analyzing the causes of disinvestment in general. A followed discussion has also been made to assess the post disinvestment social-economic-demographic scenario of the disinvestment decision.

The most important aspect of the book is to take into consideration the effects of disinvestment of public sector enterprises in the various spheres of the economy, viz. employment, income, poverty, etc.

Using a strategic model to measure the Pre & Post operative efficiency of the disinvested companies and also by using various tabulated analysis, in conclusion the author prescribed certain policies on future disinvestment strategy and suggested disinvestment of the loss making but not of profit making enterprises as the supreme priority.

Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, SJ, is the Principal and Former Rector of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), He received Ph.D degree in Economics from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. He is currently the Vice-President, Bengal Economic Association (Bangiya Arthaniti Parishad). He represented this Association in the council meeting of the International Economic Association (of which Bengal Economic Association is an Associate Member) in 2005 at Marakech, Morrocco.

Dr. Felix Raj is an well known writer and has presented papers in many national and international conferences.  Fr. Felix Raj has lectured in many universities in Europe, USA and Canada.

Fr. Felix Raj is an educationist, associated with a number of NGOs and engaged in many philanthropic activities. Parivartan and Snegam, NGOs engaged in social and educational activities are his brainchildren. His initiative, “College to Village and Village to College” at St. Xavier’s College is a novel effort in education.

He is the Director, The Goethals Indian Library and Research Society and The West Bengal State Advisor to All Indian Catholic University Federation. He is also the Secretary of the Jesuit Economic Association.

He is the recipient of (i) Mother Teresa Millennium Award in 2006, (ii) First CAB Community Development Award 2008, (iii) Mahdeolal Saraogi Award 2008, (iv) Lifetime Achievement Award by Core Sector Communique in 2011.

Teacher’s Day Celebrated

Teacher’s Day was celebrated in the College Auditorium with due reverence. Alumni members and students paid their respects to the Teachers and the non teaching staff of the College.

 Rev.Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, SJ, Principal of the College, reminded the gathering the fact that the day also happens to be the Feast of Mother Teresa and explained the role teachers play in shaping minds and building institutions that test even time.

Prof. D. Sengupta who had joined the college in 1982 was felicitated on the occasion who shared his experiences during his long tenure in the College. The students of the college presented various musical and dance programs before the assembled audience.

The programme was jointly organized by SXCCAA and the SXC students Union.

G. P. Gupta, the senior most Vice President of SXCCAA and the convener of the programme thanked everyone in his wrap up speech.
